Al Arish Travel Guide

Al- Arish - Travel Guide

Al Arish, the vibrant heart of North Sinai Governorate and the crown jewel of the Sinai Peninsula, stands as a testament to the serene beauty and cultural richness of Egypt. As of my last update, this bustling metropolis, home to over 164,830 souls as of 2012, stretches along the pristine Mediterranean coast, a mere 344 kilometers (214 miles) northeast of Cairo. It shares its borders with the intriguing lands of the Gaza Strip and Occupied Land, adding a layer of geopolitical significance to its already rich tapestry.

The city’s most enchanting feature is undoubtedly its crystal-clear blue waters, gently lapping against shores lined with lush, fruitful palm groves. This natural splendor is complemented by the city’s fine, powdery white sands, inviting visitors and locals alike to bask in its tranquil beauty. Al Arish isn’t just about natural allure; it boasts a sophisticated marina and a selection of luxurious hotels, catering to every taste and offering unparalleled comfort and elegance.

A prominent academic hub, Al Arish proudly hosts several faculties of the esteemed Suez Canal University, making it a beacon of learning and intellectual growth. Nature’s bounty is evident here too, with the city cradling the vast Wadi Al Arish. This significant valley channels flash floodwaters from across north and central Sinai, a dramatic spectacle of nature’s power and grace.

To the east lies the Zaraniq National Park, a haven for biodiversity and a sanctuary for those seeking a connection with the natural world. The park serves as a vivid reminder of the region’s commitment to preserving its unique environmental heritage.

Connectivity to Al Arish is seamless, thanks to the Al Arish International Airport. The completion of the northern coast highway in Egypt, specifically the North Sinai part, in 2008, has further enhanced its accessibility. This vital thoroughfare links El-Qantarah at the iconic Suez Canal in the west to the Gaza Strip border, passing right through the heart of Al Arish. Additionally, the reconstruction of the railway line from Cairo, an ambitious project recently reaching the “Ser and Qawarir zone” west of Arish, is a nod to the city’s historical significance. This route, once part of the Palestine Railways during the tumultuous times of World War I and II, connected Egypt with Turkey, playing a crucial role in the region’s history. Its severance during the formation of Israel marks a poignant chapter in the annals of Al Arish.

Al Arish, thus, is not just a city; it’s a mosaic of history, culture, and natural beauty, waiting to be explored by those who seek to unravel the mysteries and delights of Egypt.

The North Sinai is a milestone for the Egyptian government planners to redistribute the high-density population in the Nile Delta, and it is expected that by accomplishing the transportation and irrigation projects, three million Egyptians will settle in North Sinai.
