Reaching Akhmim: A Practical Travel and Transport Guide
Traveling to and from Akhmim has become a seamless and efficient experience, thanks to the plethora of transportation options available. The combination of trains and private taxis remains the most convenient way to explore this fascinating region of Egypt.
Air: Since 2010, the city of Sohag has enhanced its accessibility with the opening of Sohag International Airport. This airport directly connects with key cities such as Cairo and Kuwait, making it easier for travelers from around the globe to arrive.
Microbus: For those seeking a local adventure, microbus services offer an intriguing alternative. These buses run routes to the north and to Qena for just E£13. However, it’s important to note that the microbus station, locally referred to as ‘Moghaf Qena’, is somewhat removed from the center and can be challenging to find. Travelers heading to Luxor will need to change at Qena. Additionally, there are microbuses available to Al-Balyana for a mere E£3.
Train: Egypt’s railway network provides frequent and reliable service along the Cairo-Luxor main line. Akhmim enjoys about a dozen daily trains to Asyut, with fares ranging from E£65 to E£80 and a travel time of one to two hours. Trains to Luxor, offering a journey of three to four hours, cost between E£100 and E£130. For those heading to Al-Balyana, the third-class service, though slower, is extremely affordable at just E£35 and takes between one and two hours.
This range of transportation options makes Akhmim an accessible and appealing destination, providing travelers with the necessary means to uncover Egypt’s hidden treasures with ease and comfort.
