How to Get to Giza

How to Get to Giza

The Giza Plateau sits at the southwestern edge of Greater Cairo, where the city meets the desert. There is no direct international airport at Giza — all visitors arrive via Cairo, whether by air, rail, or road — and getting from central Cairo to the plateau adds between 30 minutes and two hours depending on traffic and your starting point. Planning this journey in advance is worth the effort: Cairo’s road congestion is serious, and arriving at the pyramids mid-morning having underestimated travel time is a common and easily avoided frustration. By Air Cairo International Airport (CAI) in Heliopolis is the primary entry point for international visitors. It is approximately 50 kilometres northeast of the Giza Plateau — on the opposite side of the metropolitan area. In light traffic the drive takes around 60 minutes; in peak-hour traffic, 90 minutes or more is realistic. Budget accordingly. Ride-share (Uber or Careem) from the airport to Giza is the most straightforward option. Both apps operate reliably at Cairo International; the fare to the plateau area is displayed before you book, with no negotiation required. This is preferable to unlicensed airport taxis, which typically charge significantly inflated prices. Hotel transfers arranged in advance are the most hassle-free option for first-time visitors, particularly those arriving late at night or with heavy luggage. Most major Giza hotels — including Marriott Mena House — offer airport pickup at fixed rates. Confirm the cost and vehicle type when booking. If your airline operates through Sphinx, the journey to the plateau is considerably shorter — approximately 20–30 minutes. Confirm current routes when booking flights to Egypt. By ride-share or taxi is the default option. From Downtown Cairo to the main Giza plateau entrance takes 30–45 minutes in moderate traffic. From Zamalek or Garden City, add 10–15 minutes. Rush hours (roughly 8–10am and 4–7pm) can double these times; arriving at the pyramids at opening (8am) requires leaving central Cairo no later than 7am on most days. If taking a street taxi, agree the fare before getting in. Your hotel doorman can help negotiate or arrange a trustworthy driver. Metered taxis exist but the meter is not always used; having a recent fare estimate from your hotel is useful. By Cairo Metro and taxi: Cairo Metro Line 2 (the red line) crosses under the Nile to a station called Giza in the urban Giza district. From central Cairo, this is fast and inexpensive and bypasses road congestion on the Nile crossings. From Giza Station, take a taxi or ride-share approximately 3–4 kilometres to the plateau entrance — this final leg is not walkable in the heat. The metro runs from 5am to 1am (2am during Ramadan). [LINK → Getting Around Cairo] From Luxor, Aswan, and the Nile Valley Visitors arriving from Upper Egypt typically travel by train to Cairo’s Ramses Station, then continue by taxi or ride-share to Giza. The overnight sleeper train from Luxor or Aswan arrives at Ramses in the early morning — a good schedule for getting to the pyramids early. Standard express trains from Luxor take approximately 10 hours; from Aswan, around 14 hours. Book train tickets in advance through the Egyptian National Railways website or through your tour operator, as the air-conditioned carriages fill quickly in peak season. From Ramses Station to the Giza Plateau by taxi takes approximately 45–60 minutes depending on traffic. The fastest connection is the Spanish Talgo express train from Alexandria Misr Station to Cairo Ramses, taking approximately two hours. From Ramses, continue to Giza as above. Alternatively, road coaches run frequently between Alexandria and Cairo; journey time is similar to the train but subject to motorway traffic. Day trips from Alexandria to Giza are feasible but long — allow the full day and be realistic about fatigue. An overnight stay in Cairo is the more comfortable option if your schedule allows. The plateau fills significantly by mid-morning, temperatures rise, and the queue for pyramid interior tickets — which are limited in number and sell out — is shortest at opening time. An early start from wherever you are based is consistently the best decision at Giza. Carry water for the journey; the plateau itself has limited refreshment points and the surrounding area has few reliable shops on the approach roads.
