Traveling to Siwa Oasis: Options for Every Traveler
Navigation Advice Siwa Oasis, an enchanting destination in Egypt’s Western Desert, can be an adventure in itself. There are several transportation options available to suit different preferences and budgets.
1. Bus Travel
- Convenience: Buses by West & Middle Delta Bus Co depart from the bus stop opposite the tourist police station, arriving near the central market square in Siwa.
- Destinations and Timings: There are three daily buses to Alexandria (eight hours) with stops at Marsa Matruh (four hours), departing at 7 am, 10 am, and 10 pm. There’s also a daily bus to Cairo at 8 pm, though availability may vary.
- Ticket Purchase: It’s advisable to buy tickets in advance due to high demand.
2. Microbus Services
- Location: Microbuses to Marsa Matruh leave from the main square near the King Fuad Mosque.
- Advantages: These are more frequent and generally more comfortable than the West & Mid Delta buses, with ticket prices being similar.
3. 4WD Adventure
- Road to Bahariya: A new road linking Siwa and Bahariya Oasis is partially completed, making about half of the 400 km route well asphalted. The journey takes approximately 5 hours.
- Vehicle Requirement: A 4WD is necessary, and you can arrange for drivers and permits at either end of the journey.
- Cost: The cost is around E£1500 per car. Sharing with others can help split the expense.
- Scenery and Convenience: This option offers stunning scenery and avoids the need to travel through Alexandria and Cairo.
4. Travel to/from Libya
- Border Crossing: Although Siwa is close to the Libyan border, it’s currently illegal to cross into either country along this frontier.
- Legal Crossing Point: The nearest legal crossing is at Sallum on the coast.
In summary, whether opting for the affordability of bus travel, the convenience of microbuses, the adventure of a 4WD journey across the desert, or considering travel to/from neighboring Libya, Siwa Oasis is accessible through a variety of means. Each option offers a different experience and perspective of the journey through Egypt’s fascinating landscapes.
