Aswan Uncovered: Seeking Out
Felucca Sailing
While the opportunity to ride a felucca may present itself in other Egyptian cities such as Luxor or even Cairo, the experience takes on an entirely new dimension here in Aswan. Against the backdrop of the majestic Nile, Aswan’s waters exude an almost ethereal allure. Few experiences can rival the sheer relaxation that accompanies hiring a felucca just before sunset and setting sail amidst the islands, the vast desert landscape, and the imposing black boulders that dot the horizon. The gentle flapping of the sail provides a soothing serenade, while the harmonious melodies of Nubian boys, sung from their tiny dugouts, complete this magical ambiance.
On days when cruise boats converge upon the town, a captivating spectacle unfolds as hundreds of feluccas gracefully navigate the island-studded waters. This is the perfect moment to embark on a felucca adventure that ventures slightly farther out towards the serene Seheyl Island, where tranquility reigns supreme.
Bird Watching
Aswan has long been a sanctuary for avid bird watchers, particularly during the winter months. Yet, the allure of the Nile at dawn, when the world awakens to a pristine canvas, draws in not only the dedicated twitchers but also those seeking a deeper connection with nature and a glimpse into the rich tapestry of ancient Egyptian history and Nubian traditions.
Aswan’s local guides are renowned as the ‘Birdmen of Aswan,’ and not a single winged creature can elude their watchful eyes. For years, they have guided twitchers and documentary makers through this avian wonderland, but they also welcome amateurs aboard their small speed boats. These vessels glide effortlessly through the labyrinthine channels between the islands, with the guides expertly pointing out the lush vegetation, a kaleidoscope of sunbirds, the distinctive hoopoes, and a mesmerizing array of herons, including the purple, Squacco, striated, and night herons. Pied kingfishers, little egrets, cattle egrets, redshanks, and numerous other avian species grace this natural haven, making every morning on the Nile a symphony of birdlife that resonates with the soul.
