Aswan International Airport, nestled about 30-40 minutes southwest of the city on the west bank, serves as a convenient aerial hub. While public buses don’t connect to the airport and security is stringent along the approach road, your journey from the terminal to the heart of Aswan promises to be seamless. Keep your passport and travel documents handy for smooth access.
Major airlines, including Egypt Air, Air Cairo, and Nile Air, offer regular flights to and from destinations like Abu Simbel, Cairo, and Luxor, connecting Aswan to the rest of Egypt and beyond.
By Rail: A Journey Along the Nile
Egypt’s revered railway system offers a picturesque journey along the Nile. From Luxor, a mere three hours away, you can experience the comfort of 1st or 2nd class services. If you’re venturing from Cairo, prepare for a 13-14 hour journey through the heart of Egypt, with more than five air-conditioned trains departing daily. While ticket purchases at stations can be time-consuming, your efforts will be rewarded with unforgettable views and a quintessentially Egyptian experience.
Note that foreigners often face restrictions in buying non-sleeper train tickets from Cairo to Luxor or Aswan, but this can be circumvented using self-service machines or purchasing directly on the train. Although on-train purchases might incur a small surcharge, they’re legal and common practice.
Aswan’s train station, located near the city center, is a hub of activity. Nearby, minibuses, cafes, and hotels offer convenient services for travelers.
By Car: A Road Less Traveled
For those with a spirit for road adventures, driving to Aswan has become more accessible. The border crossing west of Lake Nasser, opened in January 2017, offers a direct route from Sudan, presenting an opportunity for a unique road trip through the heart of Africa.
By Bus: The Road Warrior’s Choice
From Cairo: Board a bus at the Al-torjoman station for an overnight journey to Aswan. Ensure your ticket details are clear to avoid any confusion. Upon arrival, taxis and shared taxis are readily available.
From Hurghada: Star-Jet offers a nightly service from Hurghada to Aswan, taking approximately 9 hours. For a more comfortable journey, consider a train or taxi from Luxor as an alternative.
To/From Sudan: A bus line connects Khartoum to Aswan, with some routes stopping in Wadi Halfa. This lengthy journey can take up to 27 hours, offering a unique perspective on the vast landscapes of Egypt and Sudan.
