Edfu Travel Guide

About The Town Of Edfu

Nestled on the picturesque west bank of the majestic Nile River, Edfu stands as a testament to the enduring charm of Egypt’s historic towns. Situated 56 kilometers to the south of Esna and 105 kilometers to the north of Aswan, this town boasts a rich tapestry of history and contemporary industry. Today, Edfu is not only renowned for its thriving sugar production and the artistry of its pottery craftsmen but also for its profound connection to Egypt’s ancient past.

The very name of this modern town, Edfu, harkens back to its ancient Egyptian roots as “Djeba.” In antiquity, Djeba stood proudly on the opposite bank of the Nile, perched upon a sacred mound. The site, known as Edfu Tell, was once called “Wetjeset-hor” in classical times, bearing the illustrious moniker of “Apollinopolis Magna.” It was here, in the heart of Edfu, that the gods themselves found their abode, and the timeless mythological clash between Horus and his age-old adversary, Seth, unfolded.

Yet, the crowning jewel of Edfu’s historical treasure trove is undoubtedly the resplendent Ptolemaic Temple of Horus of Behdet. Gazing upon this ancient marvel, one is transported back in time to an era when divinity and human craftsmanship converged in harmonious splendor. Remarkably, the sands of the desert, mingled with the vestiges of human habitation, played an unwitting role in preserving this architectural masterpiece. Hidden beneath layers of time and history, the Edfu temple remained remarkably intact, patiently awaiting rediscovery.

It was the pioneering spirit of Auguste Mariette, who embarked on an excavation expedition in the 1860s, that brought Edfu’s temple back into the light of day. As the layers of sand and debris were carefully peeled away, the temple revealed itself in all its grandeur, a testament to the enduring legacy of Egypt’s ancient civilization.

Today, Edfu continues to stand as a bridge between the past and the present, a place where history, industry, and mythology converge. As you explore its vibrant streets, you can’t help but feel the echoes of ancient Egypt resonating through time, making Edfu an essential stop on any journey through this timeless land.
