History Of Hurghada

Contrasting sharply with ancient Egyptian hubs like Luxor, Aswan, and Alexandria, Hurghada’s story is one of contemporary inception and rapid transformation. Unlike these storied cities, where ancient civilizations flourished, Hurghada is a testament to modern development and change.

Early Beginnings

In the early 20th century, spanning from 1900 to 1920, Hurghada was merely a humble village, home to a small community of Arabian fishermen. Historical accounts from 1906 depict Hurghada as a settlement of just six rudimentary dwellings. Its initial economy was modest, centered around drying and selling fish to caravans traveling from the Nile Valley. A significant turning point came in 1909 with the discovery of petroleum near Hurghada, but it wasn’t until after World War II that serious excavation and production began.

Rising Prominence

Despite its current status as the largest city in Egypt’s Red Sea region, Hurghada remained relatively obscure until the 1920s. Its ascent began when sailors from the Arabian Peninsula frequented the area for fishing near Egypt’s borders. A large tree, known as “Gharqad” (Nitraria in Latin), served as a popular meeting point for these sailors, giving rise to the phrase “let’s meet at the Ghardaqa”. This phrase is believed to have inspired the city’s name, Hurghada.

Royal and Military Connections

In a nod to its growing importance, the first summer resort in Hurghada was constructed in 1952, commissioned for King Farouq, Egypt’s last monarch. Following the nationalization policies of President Gamal Abdel Nasser, this resort was repurposed as a club for the Egyptian armed forces.

Tourism Transformation

It was not until the early 1980s that tourism experts and the Egyptian government fully recognized Hurghada’s potential as a major tourist destination. The city’s proximity to a plethora of islands, its vibrant array of colorful fish and coral reefs, and a sprawling beach exceeding 30 kilometers, set the stage for its rise in the tourism sector. This natural bounty attracted local and international investors, particularly from Europe, the United States, and the Gulf countries. Their investments in hotels and resorts catalyzed Hurghada’s evolution into one of Egypt’s most sought-after vacation spots.

Current Status

As of the latest update in 2019, Hurghada stands as a beacon of modernity and a premier holiday destination, seamlessly blending its recent past with a dynamic present, offering visitors a unique blend of natural beauty and contemporary comfort.
