Dakrour Mountain is internationally renowned for its natural sand therapy, a centuries-old healing practice. Every summer—especially in July and August—people travel from across Egypt and beyond to be buried neck-deep in the mountain’s sun-heated sand. This tradition is believed to relieve ailments such as rheumatism, arthritis, joint pain, and skin conditions.

The sand here is uniquely rich in minerals, and local families have developed specialized techniques for the treatment. After the sand bath, visitors are typically wrapped in warm blankets, drink herbal teas, and rest in shaded tents to complete the process.

Tip: Treatments typically last 3 to 5 days. It’s best to consult with local practitioners (many come from Siwan families with generations of experience) for the most authentic and effective healing experience.

A Sacred Site with Sufi Roots

Beyond its healing powers, Dakrour Mountain also holds religious and cultural significance. It’s the site of the annual Siyaha Festival, a peaceful Sufi gathering that promotes unity and reconciliation. Held during the full moon in October, the event features traditional music, communal meals, and spiritual rituals—all fostering a sense of harmony and hospitality deeply rooted in Siwan culture.
