Mountain of the dead ( Gabel Al-Mawta )

Mountain of the Dead (Gebel al-Mawta) – Siwa’s Ancient Necropolis

Just a short walk from the heart of Siwa Oasis, the Mountain of the Dead (Arabic: Gebel al-Mawta) rises like a silent guardian over the surrounding palm groves and salt lakes. This cone-shaped hill may appear modest at first glance, but it holds centuries of fascinating history within its limestone folds.

A Peek into the Afterlife: Ancient Tombs and Mummies

Gebel al-Mawta served as Siwa’s main necropolis during the 26th Dynasty, Greco-Roman, and Ptolemaic periods. Carved into the rock face of the mountain are hundreds of tombs, some still adorned with remarkably preserved colorful wall paintings and inscriptions. These tombs once belonged to priests, nobles, and high officials—offering a rare glimpse into the beliefs, funerary rituals, and artistry of ancient Siwan culture.

Notable tombs include:

  • Tomb of Si-Amun – A beautifully painted tomb of a wealthy Greek who adopted Egyptian customs. It’s one of the best-preserved in the area.
  • Tomb of Mesu-Isis – Showcases detailed wall art and religious symbolism.
  • Tomb of Niperpathot – Features inscriptions reflecting the deep fusion of Egyptian and local traditions.

Insider Tip: Bring a flashlight or use your phone’s torch. Some tombs are dimly lit, and having your own light lets you fully appreciate the details of the artwork.

Breathtaking Views & Sunset Spot

Besides its historical significance, the mountain offers one of the best panoramic views in Siwa. Climb to the top (a short and easy walk) just before sunset for a breathtaking golden-hour view of the entire oasis—lush date palms, shimmering salt lakes, and the ruins of ancient Shali below.

Traveler’s Note: It’s best visited early in the morning or late afternoon, especially in summer, to avoid the midday heat.
