Amir Taz Palace

Amir Taz Palace: A Glimpse into Cairo's Illustrious Past

Situated at the intersection of Saliba Street and Suyufiyya Street, the Amir Taz Palace stands as a majestic gateway to Medieval Cairo, symbolizing the city’s vast historical heritage. Constructed in 1352, this exquisite piece of architecture was designed by a Mamluk serving Prince Taz, a son of Sultan Qalawun and son-in-law of Al Nasser Mohamed.

Over the years, the Amir Taz Palace has undergone numerous changes, reflecting the dynamic shifts of time and history. In the 17th century, it underwent major renovations under the visionary leadership of Khedive Ismail. By the 19th century, the palace had transformed into a girls’ school, thereby embedding itself in Cairo‘s evolving educational narrative. Subsequently, it took on a more pragmatic role as a storage facility for the Ministry of Education.

In recent times, the palace has experienced thorough restorations, revitalizing its ancient grandeur. Now open to visitors each morning, it offers a glimpse into its illustrious past with exhibitions that display the palace’s artifacts and historical journey. As evening descends, the palace comes alive as a cultural center, hosting the popular Egyptian television program “Al-Kasr”.

Exploring the Amir Taz Palace is an immersive journey through Egypt’s rich history. Each nook and cranny of the palace narrates tales of power, transformation, and lasting grace, making it more than just a touristic destination but a passage through the epochs of Egyptian civilization.
