Mosque of An-Nasir Mohammed
This mosque has always been in the shadow of Mohammed Ali’s more magnificent Mosque and is therefore not as popular. It was built in 1318 and was the only relic from the Mamluk error that wasn’t destroyed by Mohammed Ali but was converted to a stable for the horses instead.
The deterioration of the mosque, however, preceded Mohammed Ali as Selim I, the Ottoman Sultan, removed most of the marble coverings within the mosque. Despite all these degradations, the muqarnas are still visible as well as the old wood ceiling and the glazed tiles coverings of the minarets which are not very common in Egypt.
