Navigating Marsa Alam

Traveling by “Servees” Minibus

Embarking on a journey from Marsa Alam to Hurghada can be a multi-stage adventure via service taxis (minibuses). Typically, the route includes stops at El Quseir and possibly Safaga. The main minibus station in Marsa Alam, known locally as the ‘mowqef’, is conveniently located on the town’s northern edge. The fare for this journey generally starts at around 150 LE per person.

For those continuing to Cairo, you’ll need to head to one of Hurghada’s major bus stations upon arrival. El Gouna station is a recommended choice, offering frequent departures to Cairo every couple of hours. The journey takes approximately 7 hours, with fares varying between 175 and 400 LE one-way.

Bus Services

Marsa Alam offers four daily bus services to Hurghada, although schedules can be somewhat unpredictable. According to local sources, departures are either at 5 am, 7 am, noon, and 8.30 pm or at 5 am, 12.30 pm, 2.30 pm, and 5 pm.

El Gouna typically has two daily buses to Cairo. In Marsa Alam, you can purchase bus tickets at the office opposite the Mosque, where some buses also depart. However, for the most reliable information, it’s best to inquire within the town itself.

Be cautious when seeking information from taxi drivers at the mowqef, as there is a risk of receiving misleading information.

Hiring a Taxi

A taxi ride from Marsa Alam to Hurghada generally costs around 500 LE one way (as of early summer 2012). Bargaining skills are essential to secure a fair price. Ensure that the taxi is officially licensed for the journey to avoid any issues at police checkpoints. Additionally, clarify if a taxi change is required in El Quseir, as this could extend your travel time.

Traveling within Marsa Alam and beyond offers a glimpse into the local way of life, whether you choose the bustling servees minibus, the more structured bus service, or the privacy of a taxi. Each mode of transportation provides its own unique perspective of Egypt’s stunning Red Sea region.
